Every flow on this site needs people on your list. Most visitors leave without buying and without leaving an email. The pop-up is the moment you ask. No pop-up, and the welcome flow has nobody to welcome.
What makes one work
One clear offer. On lower prices a percent off usually works. On higher prices, money off or a free gift often reads better. An easy way to say no. One field at a time, so joining takes seconds. And it has to look like your store, not a template box stuck on top.
How we test it
We sign up ourselves, on a phone and on a computer, and check three things: the person lands on the right list, the welcome email arrives, and the code works. After launch we judge every change by total signups, not only by the pop-up's own rate.
One of our pop-ups is a mystery offer: four cards, and the shopper picks one to see their discount. It is built in our own code and running on our test store.
